The objective of computer attacks has morphed from graffiti to greed -- from adware to crimeware. Script kiddies have been pushed aside by networks of skilled internet criminals. Attacks begin immediately after vulnerabilities are publicly known, and sometimes long before. Signature-based scanning is no longer able to keep up with emerging threats. Scanning introduces vulnerabilities of its own. This Lens describes a defense that relies on behavior-based defenses. The result is a more robust multi-layered defense.
